It ceases to be a gift if you are pressurized to give it. They are not an end to themselves, but a means to an end, which is showering the couple with love and sharing in their happiness. Even if you are a marriage counselor, even if you believe the marriage is not going to work, kindly do not give a book about how to achieve a successful marriage, etc.
As a family, we had made the decision to although follow the Sikh rituals and traditions we would at the same time limit or cut down on them. Obviously getting married is a very expensive affair and therefore I did not wish my parents to have any unnecessary additional costs or be burdened with debt. The ceremonies can be as small or as large as you choose.

The reason behind the diyas is similar to the Vatna in that as the bride is looking at the glow from the diyas, the glow of the diyas is then reflected onto her face. Both the vatna and the diyas together, will ensure that the bride glows on her special day. It is traditionally a clay pot, can be of any shape and size which has a cotton wick dipped in oil/ghee. During this ceremony it is important that the light does not go out and therefore you must ensure that oil is constantly poured on the diyas. My choora was placed on a silver tray containing milk and few rose petals scattered around the tray. This not only made this look pretty, but it is said the milk softens the bangles and therefore makes it easier to slip on.
And there are generally thousands of guests so they will be sure to receive a generous amount by the end of their wedding. Wrapped gifts are usually best gifted to the bride and groom before or after the reception given a traditional reception won’t have a gift table established like at a western wedding. Furthermore the reception will be full of dancing and thousands of guests so you will most likely not want to be carrying around a large wrapped gift. Obviously, this is very much a personal choice and there is no right or wrong way to precede with the traditions. Depending on personal funds the sky is the limit when arranging a wedding.

Another point to bear in mind is that each region has what it considers appropriate. What turns a couple on in the USA may not play the same trick on a couple in India’s rural parts. Again, it could be that a Sikh couple living in the USA would be much grateful if you brought them traditional Indian dresses straight from India as their wedding gifts. It is more convenient and perhaps the oldest form of gift in the Sikh wedding traditions. On the wedding day, there are very many activities to take place.
You could even incorporate the Ladies Sangeet and the Mehndi too if you wanted to. According to the region of Punjab a Sikh comes from, may dictate the Mayian ritual varying slightly. There is a vast amount of variation options available on the market and the choice is quite varied. The Choora had an important place for my mother’s brothers and their wives as they perform the ritual of putting the bangles on me, the bride. The Mehndi must have been one of my favorite rituals and is the last ritual before the wedding.

The bride wants to groom herself more in the subsequent months after the wedding so you can also consider a cosmetic set that contains many of the beauty products in one place. They may include but not limited to brushes, hair care items, face care products, sunscreens, eye makeup, skincare products and nail accessories. That’s why you should take the time to find out what is likely to please the receiver. If you have known the couple-to-be for some time, then you can easily guess some of the items they are likely to want as gifts.
Upon completing the reading of the first stanza, the couple walk slowly around the Guru Granth Sahib in clockwise direction, with the groom leading the bride. Welcoming the new Bride – The bride generally receives a warm welcome when she reaches the groom’s home. Relatives and neighbors come over to meet the new bride and offer her blessings. Key male family members from both sides exchange garlands and greet each other symbolizing the union of the two families into one. After the milni, the groom and his side are served snacks and beverages.
The aim of the Brothers of the Tress-Knot of Guru Gobind Singh is different, different the direction, different their persuasion. Each Sikh wears the hair and the beard of Guru Gobind Singh. Our wedding in Punjab wasn’t overly lavish however it was more extravagant than a common reception. Thousands of guests were in attendance and each gifted rupees for shugun followed by a photo with each group of friends or family. Only one guest gifted us a wrapped gift at our reception which was a boxed set of wine glasses. Gift giving however might be more commonly given at non traditional ceremonies. Though for the traditional wedding in Punjab you can expect most to gift cash at shugun ceremonies. Should you choose to opt for a wrapped gift than you need to be careful with what you select given there are many gifts that would be considered inappropriate.
Assuredly, without the hair-idea of Guru Gobind Singh, there would have been no Sikh song and life today, except that the Guru Granth would possibly have been another Purana of the Hindus. Taking away the Sikh's hair is to put him off from his intensely reactive inspiration which has been so far a source of strength to the Hindu also. The long hair makes him distinctive; it does not alienate him. The spirit itself would have died without this unkempt exterior. The disappearance of the Sikh as such means the loss of a great national asset of power and inspiration for the Hindu himself. So the tresses of the Sikhs have preserved in them the Sikh history which everybody else in the Punjab has already forgotten.
In this Sikh wedding ritual, holy water is brought from the Gurudwara and the bride and groom are to bathe with this water. The water is to be brought by the sisters-in-law of the couple in an earthen pot . After the engagement, the groom’s family visits the bride and his mother symbolically covers the bride’s head with a chunni. His family also gifts the bride with clothes, jewellery, etc. During the Roka or Thaka ritual when the parents give their consent to the wedding or marriage, the groom receives food gifts from the bride’s family. Money is waved around the bride’s and groom’s head in a clockwise motion and dropped on the couple the money is donated to charity.
Sadaa Suhagan – The bride changes her wedding outfit and gets dressed in the outfit and jewelry gifted to her by the groom’s side. Elders of the family bless the bride with cash gifts and wishes of Sada Suhagan, meaning may the bride be lucky to never experience widowhood. After the chooda ceremony, the relatives of the bride come up to her and tie umbrella-shaped metallic ornaments called Kalire to her bangles and offer their blessings. All the unmarried friends and relatives of the bride are lined up and she moves the Kalire over each girl’s head. It is believed that on whosever head a Kalire falls, she will be the next one to get married.
They then take rounds around their holy book, the guru granth sahib as the laavan is chanted. “Jaggo is a time for singing and dancing where the bride’s female relatives will dance with pots on their heads decorated with oil candles,” Kaur explains. Jaggo literally translates to “wake-up” and this event would have historically happened by alerting the village at night about the upcoming wedding.
Modern Sikh GiftThe marriage can be performed by any Amritdhari Sikh that is someone who had undergone the Amrit Initiation in Sikhism. The couple then bows down before the Guru Granth Sahib. The father of the bride places a saffron colored scarf on the groom’s shoulder and the other end of the same on his daughter’s hand. Thus, they are joined and ready to take the Lavaas or vows of marriage. A typical Sikh bride prefers to wear a highly ornate, beautifully embroidered set of Salwar Kameez. Red is a much preferred color, although most shades in that color family are considered appropriate.
